Well, it’s finally time to break down the final game of the year, Super Bowl LI between the Patriots and Falcons!
When you talk about the Falcons, they are the owners of the 5th ranked rushing offense in the NFL, averaging 120 ground yards per game in the regular season. They have got to use that to their advantage and run the balal in this game; not only to possess the ball and keep Tom Brady off the field, but to set up play action for QB Matt Ryan. Once they establish that, the next challenge will be for Ryan to identify single coverage. Bill Belichick likes to run a lot of combination coverages, and he’ll mix them up on every snap, doubling a different receiver on every play. If he can do that effectively, Atlanta will have success on offense, but Belichick does not make it easy.
On the defensive side of the ball, the number one goal for the Falcons will be to get Tom Brady off his spot and keep him from standing in the pocket and throwing from the midline. Usually it takes a blitz to do that, and Atlanta has not blitzed very much, or very effectively this season. They are relying on Vic Beasley to create pressure, and that’s not going to be enough in this game. If they don’t want to blitz, they will have to create some movement up front with twists and stunts that free up players like Ra’Shede Hageman to create interior pressure. But they cannot compromise their fronts against the run. New England feels like they can run the ball with power between the tackles against this Falcons defense.
As for Brady and the Patriots passing game, they will go where the coverage takes them. Against Pittsburgh, it was Chris Hogan. This week, it could be Danny Amendola, Julian Edelman could have 100 yards, and we could see TE Martellus Bennett lined up at ‘X’ away from the triple surface. They will throw some different looks at Atlanta and see how the Falcons play it, then take the best matchup.
When we compare the defenses in this game, New England wins in nearly every major category. That could ultimately be the key to this game.Add to My RFN
