I was working for Microsoft in 2009 when I was asked to work on a special project with the New Orleans Saints. After evaluating their technology and software needs, they asked me to take a look at how they disseminated their scouting information, and the rest, as they say, is history. In introducing analytics to the NFL game, I found teams were most interested in using it as a tool in player evaluation – preparation for the NFL Combine, the NFL Draft, and free agency.
But soon I was meeting with head coaches, offensive coordinators, and defensive coordinators, and talking about how we could apply statistical analysis to their game planning process during the season. Each team I met with evaluated things differently, and so we started to develop unique packages for different teams and coaching staffs.
