Tonight, when you’re watching the game, check out what the Atlanta Falcons do with their personnel that allows them to create mismatches with the defense.
In this EA animation of a play from the Denver game, the Falcons call in “regular” or 21 personnel – 2 RB’s (one is a traditional FB), 2 WR’s and a TE. Denver keeps their base 3-4 defense on the field with the safeties in a two-high look. But then Atlanta goes “empty” in the backfield, forcing the LB’s into coverage and creating mismatches for a Denver D that can’t get into their nickel package.
The result of this play is a 49-yard pass to RB Tevin Coleman, but the play design is brilliant and offers about ten different answers for QB Matt Ryan.
