All of us here at the Real Football Network are excited to be escaping to the Margaritaville state of mind every Saturday to bring you a unique new content feature called Margaritaville Football. As Jimmy Buffett’s tour traveled across the country this year, production coordinator Heikki Larsen sat down with football personalities to talk sports, music, living the Margaritaville lifestyle and more.
We kicked things off earlier this season with former Super Bowl champion coach and current ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden. Since then, we’ve had a veritable who’s who of NFL and college football elites including JJ Watt, Cris Collinsworth, Urban Meyer, Tennessee Titans Mike Mularkey and Taylor Lewan, Bengals OL coach Paul Alexander, Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn (who will lead his team into the Super Bowl next weekend), and most recently, Broncos DE Billy Winn (you can link to ALL the podcasts below). This week, Heikki sits down with Broncos legend, five-time Pro Bowler, and two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Nalen.
Nalen, a former center, is a Broncos legend. He and Heikki talked about playing for another legend, o-line coach Alex Gibbs, his unique motivational tools, and his media policy ($5 per sentence quoted by the media!). They got into the x’s and o’s of line play, and specifically the zone blocking scheme that Denver became known for, and the finer points of blocking down on the goal line. He shared with Heikki the injuries and dings (swollen fingers every week) that occur for the big guys up front every week, and the best surgery he ever had for his torn bicep at the end of his career (no pain and no rehab for 6 weeks!)! They reminisced about playing against the Packers’ Reggie White and Gilbert Brown in the Super Bowl, and one unique Super Bowl exchange between he and QB John Elway. Nalen re-lived his first Buffett show experience and his favorite part…the people watching! He loves Croatia, but NOT tequila, so no Margarita’s here! For more on Nalen’s story, listen to the podcast!
